Digital narrative

To be done in groups, students will tell the story of their journey during first 7 weeks of the course

First term journal/blog

The journal/blog will be marked on student's ability to demonstrate
  1. engagement with concepts and texts &
  2. discovery of appropriate form and language for reflective journal writing


Term 1, Week 10

Viva voce

In this oral presentation & questions from teacher, each student finds a passage from ‘The Odyssey’ (between 20 - 50 lines long) which has a strong impact on him (see the Term 2 plan for explanation of 'strong impact').
During the Viva voce - 10 minutes per student
1. The student recites (off by heart) the passage.
2. The student then responds to the following question (for a maximum of two minutes:
What connections to you see between your selected passage and our text-culture-value(s) theme?
3. For the remaining time, the student responds to questions asked by the teachers. The questions will be designed to examine the student’s
  • understanding of the passage itself;
  • understanding of the section of ‘The Odyssey’ from which the passage has come, and the events preceding and following it;
  • ability to explore, with the panel, the reasons why the passage was chosen.



Term 2, Weeks 8 & 9

Creative appropriation

Students will present their own original appropriation of the text. This can be in the form of a short story, a poem, a cartoon story, some music, a short film, a movie proposal, dance, or another artistic form.


Term 3, Week 6

Journal/blog selection

Students will submit their 10 best journal/blog entries from the year. The journal/blog entries should provide evidence of the student's
  1. deep and grounded personal and intellectual engagement with the chosen texts and appropriations
  2. analysis and personal reflection on the knowledge and understanding gained during your research and creative work
  3. reflections on the text, culture, value[s] theme
  4. collaborations with others (students, teachers, others).




Term 3, Week 7

Exam Part 1

An essay based on a chosen quotation from a list given to students. Students will
  1. discuss the quote;
  2. demonstrate your understanding of connections between text, cultures and values; and
  3. use at least three texts to illustrate your various points.

Term 3, Week 9

Exam Part 2

Students will be asked to write a narrative in which an individual, having just finished the English Preliminary Extension course, reflects on his experience.

so, the exams account for only a fifth of our mark? and how will the 'live the voice (i may b translatin that wrong...)' viva voce presentation work? is it like a normal oral presentation with the question section at the end that normally happens counted for marks as well, or is it actually a Q&A session that is oral? I'm also curious as to how you would mark a musical or dance appropriation of a text...not saying you don't know about music or dance, just that it's probably better to develop our english skills for an original piece of work to show our understanding of the text rather than show that we have certain 'general' skills. and that digital narrative, on another page you said that we'd write about term 1 in term 3, did you mean term 1 as is written here or are there two digital narratives?
